Mescocosms Facility

Virtually all mesocosm experiments to date have been conducted on flat terrain and thus do not assess how lateral transfer of organic and inorganic solutes affect climate change responses. The newly built terrestrial mesocosms with interconnected units allow for replicated experimental studies of how Arctic terrestrial ecosystems respond to changes in temperature, precipitation and lateral position along hillslopes. Implicit in the design is the possibility to ask how climate effects are dependent on the spatial dimension where losses from upslope soils are received downslope.
